The Alphabet in Pirates Stuck at “C” by Brooke Van Sickle

In this new children’s book, Pirates Stuck at “C”: An Alphabet Adventure, the pirates come ashore at the perfect place for a treasure hunt. The story follows Captain Scallywag and his crew on their adventures searching for treasure across the island. Finally, they find the treasure where X has marked the spot!

The alphabet is creatively woven into the story.

Each letter of the alphabet begins a pirate’s name and activity. For example, we see “Marty splashing with mermaids” and read “Samson searched for seashells.” Of course, the pirate adventures are presented in order from A to Z.

The letters of emphasis on each page are red, making it easy for kids to point out the special letters. Additionally, each name is written with a capital letter and the activity is with a lowercase letter. This is a great way for kids to practice linking together the uppercase and lowercase letters.

Bring the book to life with fun pirate activities!

Kids’ Book Review for Pirates Stuck at “C”: An Alphabet Adventure

The story line is simple enough that kids can easily follow. However, the book stays exciting through the diverse things the pirates are doing. As we read the story together, my daughter loved some of the silly pirate names and circumstances.

The first time we read the book, I emphasized the alphabet within it, pausing to practice different sounds. My preschooler loved pointing out the special letters on each page. Of course, she was happiest to find the letter that her name starts with! 🙂

The bold illustrations by Gabriela Dieppa add so much to the story. The characters are cute and expressive. The pages are full of bright colors and details that are fun for kids to notice. My two-year-old was really drawn into the book because of the pictures.

After we finished reading, my four-year-old said, “Let’s read it again!” After the second time, my two-year-old said, “Again!”

Pirates Stuck at “C” was a hit with the kids.

Mom’s Book Review of Pirates Stuck at “C”: An Alphabet Adventure

As an avid preschool mom, I’m always on the lookout for new educational and entertaining alphabet books. Pirates Stuck at “C” was both.

As previously mentioned, both the story and text style are really helpful in teaching the alphabet. Additionally, the book is easy to understand while also introducing some vocabulary words that might be new to preschoolers, like trench, quill, and kelp.

This book would be a fun addition to preschool lessons with a pirate theme or even the ocean or alphabet themes.

I really like how Pirates Stuck at “C” is an alphabet book and a narrative story. This makes it a great choice for preschool time, fun time, and bedtime. I highly recommend Pirates Stuck at “C” for families with kids age six or younger.

Expanding the Book with Pirate Preschool Activities

A really fun way to expand books is to find ways to talk, sing, write, and play around what you have read. These five skills are foundational to becoming a strong reader, plus they add a lot of variety and fun to the day! So here are some awesome ideas for pirate preschool activities.

For example, you could talk about what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story or about which pirate activity you would want to do.

You could sing an alphabet song with sign language or Over the Deep Blue Sea, which is a fun movement song about getting on a pirate ship.

To write, you could draw or color pirate pictures together or practice writing some pirate words. For extra fun, get the free Pirate Printables Preschool Pack and practice writing with the Pirate Maze, Pirate Writing Practice worksheet, Pirate Treasure Counting, and Pirate I Spy.

Pretending you are pirates or taking turns hiding coins around the room and then finding them would be fun ways to play. There’s also a treasure hunt included in the free Pirate Printables Preschool Pack.
