The Value of Mazes

The biggest draw to mazes is that they are fun. I know my kids enjoy doing them. In fact, my three-year-old is happy to do the same maze several times. I print a maze (or draw one) and put it in a plastic page protector. Then she can use a dry erase marker to do the maze over and over. My older kids like harder mazes.

Beyond being fun, mazes also have educational value. They help kids learn critical thinking skills and problem solving. Children must also practice being patient as they figure out how to solve the maze.

Additionally, mazes are a fun way to practice hand-eye coordination and improve writing skills.

Furthermore, at a very basic level, when kids draw the path to finish a maze, they are learning that lines on paper have purpose. This is a critical connection to make in order to learn to read and write. So mazes can be a fun way to help your child be ready to read.

15 Other Fall Activities for Kids

Here are 15 other fun autumn activities to do with your kids.

  1. Make Gratitude Beans.
    • Put a jar and beans by the door. Then, when coming or going, say something you’re grateful for and put a bean in the jar. Try to fill the jar. Dye the beans fun fall colors for an added activity. Fun at Home with Kids shows you how to dye them.
  2. Gather flowers or leaves and make a pressed flower bookmark to use when you snuggle up and read.
    • I can’t wait to try this tutorial from Buggy and Buddy because the bookmarks look amazing.
  3. Make a squirrel puppet and do other squirrel activities.
  4. Dance in the rain.
    • Music optional.
  5. Make Paper Mache scarecrows.
  6. Go for a walk or hike and enjoy the cooling temperatures and fall colors.

  13. Go to an orchard and pick apples or go to a pumpkin patch.

  14. Enjoy a football day together.
    • Watch a football game on TV or at the local high school. If your crew is up for it, play your own game of football, either tag, flag, or mud.

  1. I love all of these ideas, Marielle! I was considering paper mache scarecrows for our Halloween porch decor this year, but we ended up instead painting some giant costume animal heads in a gruesome way to hang outside. I do want to collect leaves and press them with my kids but I hadn’t thought of creating a book mark. That is a fun idea! Thanks for sharing and linking up with me.
